Multiplication and Division Facts in Fourth Grade
and Beyond
As a fourth grade teacher, I cannot stress the importance of memorizing multiplication and division facts. Here are only a few reasons:
How can YOU help?
- Memorized facts free the mind to focus on more complex problems.
- Memorization of math facts becomes increasingly difficult as we age.
- We use facts in our daily lives.
- Knowing the facts reduces anxiety and stress.
How can YOU help?
- Make sure there is understanding of what the fact means. 3 X 4 is 3 groups of 4. Give examples.
- Explain why it is important.
- Demonstrate what fast recall is.
- Be interested in math yourself.
- Find out what facts they already know.
- Involve your child in the goal setting process.
- Focus primarily on the facts they need to learn.
- Provide encouragement along the way.
